Mansion Museum

The Mansion, headquarters for the Winnebago Historical Society, was built at the turn of the century as a private home built by banker Charlie Thompson. The Mansion serves as a museum to a large collection of local artifacts and is presently the home of memorabilia of former Governor Terry Branstad.

The Mansion is open select Sundays during the summer months and group tours may be arranged at all other times. Call (641) 585-2125 or 1 (866) 585-2092 for more information or to arrange your special tour.

Pilot Knob State Park
Pilot Knob State Park’s Website on IowaDNR.gov

Pilot Knob State Park is located five miles east of Forest City. The park features camping, bridle trails, hiking trails, and a spectacular view from the observation tower. The tower was built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Pilot Knob’s notoriety comes from it being the second highest point in Iowa at 1,450 feet above sea level. By 1921, 235 acres were purchased by a community group from private owners for $70 an acre and deeded to the state of Iowa to create Pilot Knob State Park; dedicated on September 11, 1924. In 1934 the Civil Conservation Corps did a major improvement to the Park with the construction of a 35-foot tall rock observation tower and amphitheatre that would seat 900, with rocks and timbers from the park. The vantage point from the tower gives a 360 degree view of 40 miles of country; including eight towns and thousands of acres.

The Pilot Knob Bicycle Trail runs along Highway 9 from the park to Forest City, if you wish to walk, skate, or pedal to the park.
You can email Pilot Knob at Pilot_Knob@dnr.state.ia.us
